How to grow in the Kingdom

What is a covenant anyway? In English the word usually means an “agreement” or “a written contract.” But what did the word mean in Greek New Testament?

There are two Greek words to use for covenant:

  1. The first word Syntheke (soon THAY kay) means “something that is arranged jointly.” It was the word used when two equal parties argued out an agreement. Both parties expected to get their fair share from the deal.
  2. The second word Diatheke (dee ah THAY kay) means “a contract created with conditions stipulated solely by the one writing the agreement which gives that individual the supreme control of the arrangement .” It was the word used when one party set the terms of the agreement for a property when he gave it to another. This diatheke, was always the word used for making a legal will. The one who makes the will has complete authority over the disposition of his property. He can give it to whomever he pleases; he can establish whatever terms he wants. The one who makes the “arrangement” has total power; the one who receives the “arrangement” may accept it or reject it, but he cannot alter it.
    1. This word is always used when God makes covenant with MAN!
    2. The word New Testament means this term, a new covenant where which God puts forth the terms of a New Agreement to reconcile man to Himself, but man still has to follow His terms of the agreement. Man is free to accept or reject the covenant, but he cannot alter it!!!
    3. This is where we have gone wrong….we have
    4. God deals with His creation covenantly, He doesn’t meet us as pears or equals.. He meets us as a Supreme creator with a love for His creation.
    5. Our love for grace and mercy has misled us to think we can approach God as His pear.
  3. Here is an Example
God has given three disciplinary methods to mankind

    1. In society God has given Capital punishment, the ultimate discipline
    2. In the family God has given the Rod
    3. In the church God has given excommunication
      1. Today we have abdicated capital punishment from our society
      2. We are fast losing the ROD in the family
  • And excommunication is unthinkable today as we think we are meant to take people in on their terms and we are here to serve them…BUT THIS IS WRONG
  1. When you come into the church of God you become a servant yourself.
  2. CHURCH IS NOT A MEMBERSHIP WHERE…you come in and join and get special favors over others!!! That’s a sporting club… No we come in and lose our identity to take on His identity. We get the better part of the deal

  1. Understanding covenant, understanding that Jesus is the King in His Kingdom.
    1. Who better has the right to tell us how to get in the Kingdom than King? Matt 16 King Jesus tells us, He makes the great sovereign announcement, of His church!! Up until now, it was Moses congregation..Now it is Jesus…
    2. Worth noting, is the FIRST MENTION of Jesus on the CHURCH! This always has significance 1st.

Mat 16:18-19  And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven

You see when we stop fighting the terms of the contract of Jesus’ agreement and just start obeying them…our lives line up and grow…fruitfulness flows….and the Kingdom of God naturally is established….The more we do what the King said too….the more we reflect the King.

You then become JESUS’ REPRESENTATIVES on earth

This may sound hard….but the truth is we have Christians all over the place with bleeding hearts about how their life isn’t working….but the truth is we have a bad culture of disobedience to the King..People want Jesus’ blessing but don’t want to obey His commands.  We are an age where everyone wants to go their own way!!  Better that we come in and follow Gods way.

Now lets read from the Book of Ephesians, or as it is known “the great book of the church”  here Paul gives us the highest revelations on the church.

Eph 1:1-16  Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus:  Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.   Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,  even as he chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before Him.  In love He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will,  to the praise of His glorious grace, with which He has blessed us in the Beloved (God sees Jesus on us).

  1. Growing in God is a matter of growing in Holiness
Its not about growing intellectually in doctrines which is important & but about growing in the grace of the Christ Jesus.

    1. There cannot be a disconnect between intellectual conception of doctrine & the right biblical behavior!
      1. Doctrine is behavioral
Titus was the entrusted leader of the Apostle Paul to the Church of Titus.
Listen to the instruction that Titus is given from Paul to establish the NT church.
Tit 2:1  But speak thou the things that become sound doctrine:

Tit 2:2  That the aged men be sober, chaste, prudent, sound in faith, in love, in patience.

Tit 2:3  The aged women, in like manner, in holy attire, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching well:

Tit 2:4  That they may teach the young women to be wise, to love their husbands, to love their children.

Tit 2:5  To be discreet, chaste, sober, having a care of the house, gentle, obedient to their husbands: that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Tit 2:6  Young men, in like manner, exhort that they be sober.

Tit 2:7  In all things show thyself an example of good works, in doctrine, in integrity, in gravity,

Tit 2:8  The sound word that cannot be blamed: that he who is on the contrary part may be afraid, having no evil to say of us.

  1. Sound Doctrine is behavioral
    1. If our behavior doesn’t match our growth in doctrinally, then something is wrong!!
  • Growing in the Kingdom of God is not just growing intellectually..
  1. It is maturing behaviorally and relationally
  1. Holiness is the measurement for our growth
    1. You can be as carnal as the devil and doctrinal
    2. What I believe must become what I do
  • Holiness means: separated unto God
  1. Baptism is both immersion and raising, the old is buried and the new man is raised. That’s why it is import to obey the instruction of Jesus, Repent and be Baptised..
  2. We must balance the goodness of God with the severity of God
Romans 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shall be cut off.  Meaning of severity: the sever discipline of God”

We only hear the first part…His GOODNESS.  We sing of His goodness but when was the last time a song was on the severity.

When God chastens us, you think that God has left you or you spend your days rebuking the devil..But the word tell us

He chastens those whom He loves…. When

FACTS:  God is going to bountifully bless you but at times also ruthlessly chasten you!!   When you know this, a restriction of discipline around you won’t throw you!

Gods love is not to be used to justify a life that is opposing to Him… We are called to be a Holy people.

  1. When we grow we become more like God, in His likeness, not attaining to be as God, but as glorified human beings..

Eph 1 says “He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, even as He predestined us before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before Him

So growing in the Kingdom, is growing totally, growing intellectually, behaviorally, relationally, growing in every aspect of our life!!

Gods desire is that we become an extension of the Trinity here on earth, when people encounter you they encounter heaven and it’s creator!!

Hebrews 8:5 tells us Moses was shown a model in heaven for earth

The pattern of the tabernacle was according to a heavenly reality. It was a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. Therefore, it had to be made according to exact dimensions, being somewhat of a “scale model” of the area around God’s throne in heaven.

  1. If we could fully understand the Tabernacle we would understand the nature of God.
  2. 1st the preist would come to the brazen alter and deal with his sin,
  3. 2nd he would come to the brazen laver, submit to the judgments of the word by the Spirit!
    1. BRASS speaks of judgment, the heavens are as brass…normally God is not happy
    2. You had to go throw the brass before getting to the gold!!
  • Now you’re ready to entre…its no different today!!
  1. You can’t come around the table of God with issues against a brother!
  1. Next you could come into the Sanctuary of God
    1. Aluminated by the golden lamp-stand
    2. Fed by the table of showbread
  • Worship at the golden altar with an uncovered Ark of covenant no-longer separated by the curtain that now has been torn in two because of the Calvary’s cross
  1. If we come together before dealing with sin, we create a short circuit of our worship!

2 Cor 7:1 Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The Holy Spirit when He comes, He comes and makes your spirit Holy, separated unto God.

A Holy person gives off an atmosphere that you can feel, just like standing in the presence of an evil man.

Eph 4:13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
