Jonah Running From God

Why Jonah and how does it connect to the Theme of the book of Acts?

Today the extended Church from the book of Acts has many members running from God, just like Jonah..
(Jonah 1:1-3 NKJV)

Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

Here are some observations of this story

  • When we run from God we run to some of the weirdest strangest places
  • God is generous with His grace
  • The book of Jonah is required to be read on the afternoon service of The Day of Atonement, Yonkipor. So on the holiest day of the entire year, Gods people are required to hear and read this book. Why? Because there are treasures and principles in this book for Gods people to of reflect upon when they are being forgiven of their sins!! All is forgiven!
  • A Rabbi teaches that everyone can find their life in the book of Jonah somewhere? What about you?
  • God wants to get you back without getting you back! If you’re running from God, God will orghistraight conditions in order to get you back on track!

Noah is Running from God

  • God says go to Nineveh, but Jonah runs to Tarshish.
  • He runs to the end of the world at that time, that was Tarshish
  • When running from God, sometimes Gods best is the exact opposite of what we think
  • Jonah gives up on life and just wants to die, the pagan sailers are willing to throw their possessions overboard to save the Prophet of God, but Jonah wants them to through him instead. Who’s being the pagan now?
  • When you run from God, everything that once seemed attractive quickly turns into negatives, depression comes and the will for your life goes!
  • Because there is life found in the will of God for your life! Arthur Blessed said “i can stay here in this hospital bed and maybe I’ll live, but I’d rather die out there in the will of God for my life than stay here live outside it”

Three times it says “Jonah fled from the face of The Lord

Jonah 3 days in the belly of the whale, Jesus 3 days in the grave

In 3 days Jonah saved a nation, in 3 days Jesus saved the Nations

Jonah was the son of Amittai which means “devoted to truth for the next generation” Jesus is the Truth dedicated to bring truth for all generations

Historical background

  • Assyria was the longest running empire in the world even to this day
  • Assyrians were known for their cruelty, they had mastered skinning people as torture and still keeping them alive longer.
  • They were known for cutting noses, ears off as a warning to never mess with Assyrians
  • 776BC Jonah supported Jeroboams expansion plans and became a vocal enemy of Assyria. KEY: Be careful who you make your enemies as God might just send you there later in life!!

THEN GOD SENDS JONAH TO THIS PEOPLE, and this is why he wants to run! He was against this people.

Jonahs name means: from the miar, meaning from the clay or dirt, like us,

Jonah was the son of Amittai which means “devoted to truth for the next generation”
