The Culture Within – The Good Samaritan

We need to be INTENTIONAL about seeing His KINGDOM established here in our world!!
Luke 10:25-37

“And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it? ” So he answered and said, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
Lawyers were schooled in the law and this was an easy answer for this man….to reply to Jesus
But then in verse 29, he begins justifying himself why he hasn’t lived this part…who is my neighbor?
The BUT displays the issues of his heart!!

I would like to unpack this common passage of Scripture of the Samaritan:

As we do this, lets be sensitive to what the Holy Spirit would challenge us on today!!

Here are seven observations that we can learn from this Story that Jesus told of the Good Samaritan:

  1. The road to Jericho was a rocky hilly road with steep decline away from Jerusalem the holy city, Jerusalem was a city set on a hill.
  2. This was the direction with the least resistance, who knows it is easier going downhill?
  3. Here is a man heading on a journey away from the holy city, a picture of heading away from the things of God.
  4. The priest and Levite were probably going the other way, to the holy city where they fulfilled their religious duties
  5. We mustn’t forget that there is a real enemy lying waiting for people that he can use them, rob them and then leave them dying and bleeding and empty with nothing but brokenness..
  6. The enemy left him naked, shamed and without GARMENTS, yet God is the great giver of garments, of salvation, garments of praise, garments of light, garments spiritual armour…the devil wants to take those things away and leave people vulnerable and without covering
  7. The enemy wondered him, they could have just taken his stuff, but instead they choose to go further and beat him, now he’s completely helpless and close to death..in a lost state in need of GRACE from someone………This has always been the plan of the devil rob, kill and destroy
    1. But simple generosity can undo all the enemies plans..

The Heart of the Samaritan

  1. He had a different heart
  2. He made himself available and he wasn’t a professional to help
  3. He had a compassion to those in need…this word means to feel with them…sensitive
  4. He was generous….Generous and Righteous come from the same HEBREW word, meaning you cant be righteous without being generous and gen with right….
  5. He came to where the people were
  6. He took him to a place of restoration..the Inn…The church is this Inn.
  7. He followed up with responsibility…I will come back and pay…

This story is instruction for us and how to operate in the Kingdom of God in the earth today!!
