The New Man

If I was to ask you, Who are you?
I’m sure lots of answer would be about what you do, your position, your function in the home, your education title maybe, your calling or maybe your social status or age demographic that you relate to.

THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS: All of these identities can be taken away!  Then you lose your identity!!

Or the world would say another way, you need to find your own self-esteem
Meaning: confidence in one’s own worth or abilities; self-respect, pride, self-regard and faith in self,

YET THE Word of GOD HAD speaks against these things;
God has given us A MUCH BETTER MODEL TO FOLLOW:  His Son Jesus, there we find our identity!!!

Why did Jesus come to earth and identitfy with us?

“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, Hein all points was tempted as we are, yet without sinning.” Hebrews 4:15.

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8.

“Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with deep cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.” Hebrews 5:7-9.

“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham. Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.” Hebrews 2:14-17.

So lets look at what Jesus did and why

2 Corinthians 5:16-18

2Co 5:16  So as we now know, no one according to flesh, but even if we have known Christ according to flesh, yet now we no longer know Him so.

2Co 5:17  So that if anyone is in Christ, that one is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

2Co 5:18  And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

Typology: is putting on Christ like a coat which we talked of last week.

Ephesians 4:24

and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

Romans 6:6

knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;

Colossians 3:10

and have put on the new man who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him–

Romans 13:14

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our fleshly (outer) man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.

Col 2:6  Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7  rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Heb 6: 19  That hope (in what Jesus did at the cross for us), is a secure anchor for our souls, reaches behind the curtain 20  where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone on our behalf, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

God’s promise to His heirs of His Kingdom – was to accept faith in His Son as an exchange for justification and payment in place of sickness, suffering and personal righteousness; and finally to bring every persevering believer into eternal glory.

What is an heir?

a person legally entitled to the property or rank of another on that person’s death.

Are you putting to good use everything that Christ has made you heir to?

James 1:22-25  But become doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man studying his natural face in a mirror. For he studied himself and went his way, and immediately he forgot what he was like. But whoever looks into the perfect Law of liberty and continues in it, (faithfully applying the word in practical living) he is not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work. This one shall be blessed in his doing.

In the natural: Did you know that no one has actually seen themselves, they have only ever seen a copy, a reflection from a mirror…

In the Spiritual: So the Word of God shows an image, a carbon copy of us through the image of Jesus!

We must see our selves through the mirror of His Word and let it continue to conform us to the identity of Jesus Himself

So where does our identity really come from?
